Can anyone help me with a serious computer problem?

A couple of days ago when I turned on my computer it only started in safe mode. I was finally able ot get it out of safe mode. However now I can not change the color setting or screen size. I have tried everything reccomended in the Help section and nothing changes. And to make matters worse, now when I go to the Control Panel and click on Display to change the settings I get prompt asking which program I want to use to open it, and that has never happened before. The only thing I am able to open is internet explorer, and even then it is not opening to my default browser. If anyone at all has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate them.

  1. Try a system restore to go back a week or so to when the computer was running right Run a full virus and spyware scan Look in device manager to make sure your drivers are ok for the graphics card which affects display settings
  2. sounds odd, suggest running scan disk error check first, then analize with defragmenter for free space , but don't defragment, only view, then check seating of video board and cables connections, then run anti spyware, and clean up old files, read other answers, ..
  3. I have questions like this all the time. Someone's kid has hit something on the keyboard and now the computer won't work. There is any easy solution to the problem. You can restore your system to an earlier date. Let me tell you how to get there first then I will explain everything. Click on Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> System Restore. This program that is built into windows was apparently intended for such an occasion as this. By following the above instruction you should have open a "System Restore" window. By using this you will reset your computer to a previous point, before this problem with you safe-mode and whatnot. Make sure the button marked "restore my computer to an earlier time" is marked then hit next. You will see a calender on the left with light dates and BOLD dates. The bold are your days that you can pick to restore to (a.k.a. restore points). Now select a date just before your computer problems. If you haven't loaded anything lately, then the restore point may be last month or the month before. Click on the earliest day before your mishap, and on the right you will see a discription of what you loaded or just a little info on whatever you did on the system. Once you have picked a day click on next. The next screen will ask you if you are sure you want to restore your system to that earlier date. You bet! Click next and it will restore your computer then click finish. Restart your system and check it out. Everything should be back to normal. Thanks, Charlie
  4. Can't you reinstall os?
  5. I need to know more about your system I am guessing you have WinXP? please run this small utlity from the system. Go to Start, Run and in the run box type DXDIAG and hit enter now a window will pop up, in the bottom right corner look for "Save All Information" click that to save that to the desktop now open what you just saved from the desktop and "Copy & Paste" here so it can be reviewed.
