How do i fix my computer problem?

My problem is that i connected my computer(HP a1600n) to my 19in MAGNAVOX tv. When i turn on the tv the the disply resolution for my computer is 800 by 600 pixels which is so big and it won't let me move it to 1280 by 1084 pixels, it won't move at all. So my question is, how can i get it to a normal display resolution on my tv?What do i have to do?

1. Chances are that you aren't going to be able to use the TV at the same resolution as a computer monitor. Unless you have a 1080p HDTV, the resolution of a standard TV is not as high as a computer monitor. Even a 720p TV has a max resolution of 1280x720 which is less than the 1280x1084 you are shooting for.
2. Do you know for sure that your TV supports resolutions higher than 800 x 600. If it is not an LCD or HD TV chances are it may not. On older TVs 352 x 240 was standard with 800 x 600 being a “higher” TV resolution. Your PC may be detecting the highest compatible resolution supported by the display and automatically setting itself to that.
